REQUIREMENTS & STEPS

The first of the seven sacraments, and the “door” which gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist constitute the “sacraments of initiation” by which a believer receives the remission of original and personal sin, begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit, and is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ.

When a person is baptized he or she is:

  • Made a new creation, an adopted son or daughter of God, who has become partaker of the divine nature.
    – CCC 1265

  • A member of the Body of Christ, the Church. – CCC 1267

  • Freed from the power of darkness and is brought into the realm of the freedom of the children of God.
    – CCC 1250

  • Able to believe in God, to hope in him, and to love him through the theological virtues; Given the power to love and act under the prompting of the Holy Spirit through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
    - CCC 1266

The steps below are for a children under age 7.  If you are seeking the sacrament of Baptism for someone over age 7, call our office for options.  Adults may participate in our Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) process.  Children and youth may participate in our Family Faith Formation

We are thrilled you are choosing to have your child baptized in the Catholic Church!  We love welcoming families desiring to fulfill their right & duty to educate their child(ren) in our Catholic faith & fostering a home that evangelizes their children (CCC 2221-2228).  We look forward to preparing your family for the Sacrament of Baptism & growing our community of faith!  Please read the below steps:

 

Important: If you are not a parishioner of Holy Name Catholic Church and live outside of Routt County, you will need to receive preparation from your local parish as well as a signed letter of permission from your pastor to receive the Sacrament of Baptism for your child are Holy Name.

    • Fill out the Baptism Form or in español: Forma de Registro Bautismal

    • This form includes basic contact information, child & parent information, and some Godparent information. If you don't know some of the information, you will be able to edit or make additions to the form later.

    • We need your full names (& mother's maiden names) because this is what is entered into the Book of Sacraments both digitally & handwritten. 

  • Complete the Online Certification of Belonging: Baptism into the Family of God

  • Godparents complete the Sponsor Form.
    Regarding the selecting of Godparents, choose the best teachers practicing our Catholic faith to help you evangelize your child.  Pray about it!

  • Attend a welcome gathering!
    Once you complete the video series, Tim & Nissa Brodman want to welcome your family into our Catholic community!!! They will host a small gathering to welcome your growing family into the Church! The location of the gathering will either be at the Brodman residence (The Little Penny Farm) or at Holy Name Church.

    • Parents must be willing to bring their child up in the Catholic Faith. Baptism is the beginning of supernatural life, but it must be nurtured throughout life.

    • Parents must attend a baptism preparation class here or at their parish

  • Godparents/Sponsors

    • Must be good examples and sources of support for both the child and the parents and be fully initiated members of the Catholic church.

    • Must be confirmed and at least 16 years old.

    • Must either be living a chaste life as a single person or be married in a valid Catholic marriage.

    • Must be actively living their faith, attend Mass and confession regularly.

    • Must attend a baptism preparation class here or supply proof of attendance from their local parish.

    • Only one Catholic godparent is required.
